Geologically, Soapstone is part of the metamorphic rock formations that make up a large part of the Earth's crust. It is the product of profound physical and chemical transformation resulting from the heat and pressure emanating from the core of the Earth. Having withstood the impact of these powerful forces, soapstone emerges, ready to be further transformed by human will and creativity.
Similarly, healing requires that we move beyond our limitations. It requires that elevate our consciousness to see beyond the habitual patterns and reactions of our ego and simultaneously remain firmly grounded in the reality of our lives. In healing arts, Soapstone is believed to reflect this dual property.
Soapstone is said to emit a calming energy, both stimulating us to action and providing for peace at the center of our being. It allows us to release old routines and to create new loving environments. It both moves and widens our horizons, assisting us in changing with the tides, being ever ready for new situations and new challenges.
Soapstone has inspired artists and craftsmen throughout the globe for millennia as a medium for carving everything, from humble pottery to sacred sculpture. The Soapstone Valley of the Rock Creek Park, located barely within a mile from our headquarters, contains deposits of Soapstone that had been used by Native Americans as far back as 2,000 BC.
The name connects us with our environment, with the place where we live and work. It reminds us of the transformation that is possible, in ourselves and in those we serve.
