Miriam (Mimi) Ratner, MSW
Miriam (Mimi) Ratner is an integrative psychotherapist, licensed clinical social worker and intuitive counselor with over 25 years of clinical experience. She is the visionary behind Soapstone Integrative Health Associates and its owner and principal clinician.
Mimi employs a wide variety of modalities in the field of energy psychology as part of her practice. She specializes in integrative oncology, thought-managment stress-relief model.
Mimi has trained in traditional models of psychotherapy, solution-oriented family therapy, and couples counseling. Her philosophy of care comes from a spiritual perspective and a deeply compassionate, consciousness-raising understanding of how people actually heal. She is a graduate of The Catholic University of America (MSW).
She was on staff at the Washington Cancer Institute of the Washington Hospital Center for 10 years, where she founded the thriving behavioral health/energy therapy component of patient care. She has been in private practice for over 20 years. As a mentor and supervisor, she has trained dozens of graduate clinical social work students and psychology interns.
As a consultant, she offers clinical supervision to professional staff at a major palliative care organization. She privately consults to professionals in practice who are interested in counseling the medically ill.
In addition to her professional training in behavioral psychology and emotionally-focused relationship counseling, Mimi trained with Jose Rosa (MD) and Jonathan Goldman in indigenous healing practices.
Izabella Tabarovsky, MA/HTCP
Izabella Tabarovsky is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, clinical aromatherapist, and certified life path/professional path coach. She is a founding partner at SIHA. She is a Myers-Briggs counselor and has been trained in the Enneagram and other methods integrating Western psychology with the Eastern view of the body. She brings these experiences together to create a holistic healing experience for her clients.
Through her work, Izabella helps clients diminish physical pain, accelerate healing, diminish the effect of chronic illness, alleviate stress, depression and anxiety, reconnect with their higher spiritual selves, access deeper levels of awareness, and create a greater sense of peace and well-being.
She empowers clients to take a pro-active approach to their lives to create lasting change from within. She gives them tools to follow their internal wisdom to attain extraordinary results in their lives.
In addition to her private practice, Izabella collaborates with the Washington Cancer Institute and individual physicians to potentiate Western medical approaches through the use of complementary healing modalities. She has developed a specialty in working with cancer, post-surgery, and chronic pain patients.
Izabella is a passionate advocate of holistic health and wellness and dedicates much of her time to educating others on how to take charge of their well-being. She sees her mission in awakening others to the limitless potential within them and empowering them to live the most abundant, authentic, fulfilling, meaningful, and prosperous life they were meant to live. She frequently teaches workshops on enhancing health and well-being throughout the greater Washington, DC, area and nationally.

Mark Sullivan, MSW
Mark Sullivan is a Clinical Social Worker at the Washington Hospital Center and a founding partner at SIHA. He received his training in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, also known as "tapping") while doing a clinical counseling internship at the Washington Cancer Institute, where he was also certified as a level-one Reiki practitioner.
As part of his lifelong interest in mind-body and energy practices, Mark has studied shiatsu and has taught tai chi and meditation. Mark is a novelist and musician and believes that life is a profoundly creative endeavor undertaken in relationship with others.
Mark's grounding presence allows clients to safely identify the emotional and behavioral patterns that block their progress and keep them from engaging fully with life.
Mark holds an M.A. from Colgate University and an MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Phil Appel is the Director of Behavioral Health Services at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Washington, DC, where he specializes in pain management, adjustment to illness, injury and disability, behavioral medicine consultations, and performance enhancement. Phil has been with NRH since 1987 working with individuals who experience persistent pain that interferes with their performance and quality of life. He helps individuals adjust to the life challenges that are brought on by disability and chronic illness or injury.
From 1976 until 1987 Phil was an Active Duty Behavioral Science officer with the U.S. Army and did his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Phil is a former president of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and is a Fellow of that organization. He is also a member of the American Psychological Association. He has published extensively and has several peer reviewed scholarly book chapters and journal articles to his credit on topics ranging from anxiety and pain to PTSD. He presents at conferences nationally and teaches workshops annually to health care clinicians ranging on a variety of topics including pain management, use of imagery in psychotherapy, and use of intuition in clinical practice.
As a current partner, his clinical practice at Soapstone is directed at both individuals and couples. When working with individuals, Phil provides treatment for anxiety and depression, and teaches a variety of ways of dealing with stress, including guided imagery techniques, meditative techniques, and energy psychology interventions, as well as traditional cognitive-behavioral and gestalt therapy-style interventions.
He works with couples to resolve conflicts, improve couple communications, and increase number of positive loving interactions. He also does executive health coaching for individuals in business who have medical problems that may pose challenges in performing and executing their responsibilities. He is a Level II Reiki practitioner and offers energy-based healing sessions for those who desire it.
Phil is listed in the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology and has his Certificate of Professional Qualifications in Psychology from the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. He is licensed in both Maryland and the District of Columbia.
